It all begins with an idea.

Newspace North is a one-of-a-kind hybrid innovation & satellite test centre for upstream space industry in Norway.

What makes Andøya so special?

Andøya, nestled in the heart of Nordland, Norway, is a breathtaking gem that effortlessly combines raw natural beauty with cutting-edge innovation.

Imagine towering, majestic mountains cascading into crystal-clear waters, framing endless horizons of white, pristine beaches kissed by the Arctic winds. The Gulf Stream weaves its magic just offshore, creating a unique climate that supports an extraordinary array of wildlife.

Here, you’ll find whales breaching against the midnight sun, sea eagles soaring above untouched landscapes, and puffins bustling along dramatic cliffs. It’s a haven for those seeking an intimate connection with nature’s wonders.

But Andøya is more than just a paradise for adventurers and nature lovers; it’s Norway’s hub for the upstream space industry, a cutting-edge epicenter where Earth’s beauty meets the infinite possibilities of space exploration.

The island is home to a state-of-the-art spaceport, offering unparalleled opportunities for satellite launches and scientific research. This seamless blend of majestic scenery and technological innovation makes Andøya a place like no other—a destination where inspiration strikes at every turn, whether from the rugged wilderness or the limitless sky above.

Come for the beauty, stay for the magic, and experience a sense of awe that you will never forget.

The island is connected to the national roadsystem, has a large airport and deep sea ports, a low-density airspace and offer launch inclinations ranging from 90 to 110.6 degrees. We call it Future Island.

These are favorable for both sun-synchronous and polar orbits and the flightpath ensures a trajectory that don’t cross populated areas. The large impact and dispersion area in the Norwegian Sea enables safe disposal of the spent stages.

The close proximity of the spaceport, the space village and the satellite testcentre makes it attractive for upstream space industry from all over the world to establish themselves here. Andøy municipality is very active in making this happen.

Andøya local ecosystem

  • Launch service for small satellites into polar low Earth orbit and sun-synchronous orbits. The spaceport can offer launch inclinations ranging from 90 to 110.6 degrees. These are favorable for both sun-synchronous and polar orbits.

The flightpath ensures a trajectory whose ground track don’t cross populated areas. The large impact and dispersion area in the Norwegian Sea enables us to safely dispose of the spent stages. The spaceport will serve launch vehicles designed to deliver payloads of up to 1.5 metric tons, primarily using liquid fuel.

As a launch site operator, Andøya Space provides the technical infrastructure, the launch pads and the buildings, while launch service providers bring their launch vehicles to our spaceport. Together we safely lift the customers satellites into their designated orbits. Andøya Space also offer logistical services to aid in transportation and customs handling upon arrival and departure, VIP-arrangements for launch campaign observers, a friendly work-environment for all our partners and customers present at the site and provide the overall safety and security regime required for a safe launch.

  • Providing courses, seminars and more on space-related subjects from high school and up to university level. Andøya Space Education works closely in collaboration with academia, industry, and other partners to offer activities for university students. This national initiative is called the Norwegian Space Academy.

Norwegian universities are increasing their educational offerings related to the space sector. In addition, key players in the national space industry contribute to education and training through various programs.

Together we intend to consolidate a national network of institutions to help university students build their future in this exciting field full of opportunities. Explore the different space educational programs and opportunities found in Norway.

    Internships and theses:

Explore the opportunities based on the unique resources available at Andøya! Every year Andøya Space offers various internships, bachelor’s, and master’s theses.

    Spaceship Aurora:

The visitor center is aimed at tourists and the general public, as well as pupils, students and teachers. Here you can experience virtual space travel, you can learn about the northern lights, understand its origin, the effect it has on our planet, and how it is reflected in Norwegian history and culture.

  • It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

  • More information to come

We’d love to be more informative, but we don’t want to jinx the discussions we’re having with some manufacturers

    More service providers to come

We’d love to put more names on the list and we’re in discussions with other launch service providers.

  • Focusing on test and operational training of defence related technologies. With a danger area of 25 000 square kilometers, and a low-density airspace, complex tests of weapon systems not possible to conduct anywhere else.

    • Aircraft system testing

    • Drop tests

    • Tests of boosters and rocket motors, including hypersonic versions

    • Test of missile seekers

    • Tests of drones, including operational training

    • GBAD test and operational training

End-to-end testing of weapon systems often require targets to engage. Andøya Space collaborates with both Airbus and Maritime Robotics to offer multiple types of aerial and ocean-going target drones. The catalog of drones ensures that we can conduct realistic training exercises by matching any type of weapons system.

  • A trusted provider of drone surveillance solutions, Tiepoint offers cutting-edge technology and expertise to protect your assets and operations.

  • Norway is NATO's northern flank, and the Atlantic Ocean state that all Russian Northern Fleet nuclear submarines must pass on their way to or from the main base on the Kola Peninsula. In Norway, Andøya have a particular responsibility to monitor the movements of these submarines, a task that Andøya solved for 50 years.

Andøya air station is the main Norwegian base for training, operating, and developing long-range defense drones. Space-based services are central to military operations and are becoming increasingly important in cooperation with allies, partners, and the NATO community.

Long-range drones will increase the ability to continuously understand the situation and monitor our local areas. A good understanding of the situation is important to ensure national control and freedom of action.

The drones will contribute to the monitoring of maritime areas of interest in the north, and support total defense during natural disasters and rescue operations.

According to the Minister of Defence, the drones are to be operated in a multinational collaboration with close allies that involves both training, operation and development.

In addition, Andøya is a base for allied reception.
